Philip S. L. Chao, CFP

Principal and Founder

Contact Philip

Philip Chao founded Experiential Wealth, Inc. In 1992 to provide individuals, families and institutions with the independent and thoughtful advice that would serve as a tailored alternative to the conflicted, one-size-fits-all, bundled solutions. Philip wants to make available industry best practices to help clients and fiduciaries make prudent investment and portfolio decisions.

As the Chief Investment Officer of the firm, Philip designs and manages investment portfolios in the best interest of the clients. By emphasizing risk as well as return, each portfolio is calibrated in an attempt to align the long term expected investment outcome with each client’s criteria and expectations. Portfolio design is based on a core-satellite approach of recognizing the importance of a portfolio core with exposure to market risks (beta) in order to capture market returns. Further, the process targets certain segments of the portfolio to gain exposure to non-traditional assets and investment strategies (alpha) in seeking downside protection and return enhancement.

Philip serves as an ERISA investment consultant in a co-fiduciary capacity – as an ERISA Sec 3(21) – so that clients can rely on his advice with full confidence. For retirement plan sponsors, he implements a prudent investment process to meet their fiduciary responsibilities. When managing defined benefit assets or defined contribution plans, he offers full fiduciary service under ERISA 3(38) for those clients who wish to defer plan level investment and selection decisions or provide discretionary portfolio management for ERISA assets.

Philip is a founding member of The Institute for the Fiduciary Standard. His opinions and thoughts appear in InvestmentNews,, and other industry news outlets. His public comments to the DOL and SEC can be found on the DOL and SEC websites.

Philip earned his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation in 1990 from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, and Retirement Plan Associates (RPA) designation in 2006 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Philip is a member of a number of investment advisory committees and has been a featured speaker and moderator on numerous panels on topics as varied as CIT, revenue sharing, retirement income, managed accounts and target date investments at national conferences. His whitepapers, commentaries and opinions can be found on the company website.
